Maria, una povera ragazza rimasta orfana, è stata raccolta e allevata da Don Giuseppe, parroco di un paesetto del Piemonte. Durante la guerra conosce un ufficiale inglese, George Craig, che s'innamora di lei e la sposa. In viaggio di nozze a Napoli e prendono alloggio in una modesta pensione, ma la mattina dopo, all'alba, lo sposo sparisce lasciando la ragazza nella disperazione.
