In un desolato paesino della Sardegna, in perenne siccità , gli strozzini si arricchiscono alle spalle dei poveri agricoltori. Per una banale questione Melchiorre ammazza Pedru e poi si dà alla fuga. Il fratello dell'ucciso vuole vendetta e, rintracciato l'omicida, lo ferisce. Melchiorre verrà soccorso dalla madre di Pedru: questa circostanza fa pentire l'uomo di aver ucciso il figlio della donna. Andrà poi a costituirsi.
